MA PHIT: Housing Refresher and Food Training
Applications due Jan. 9, 2024
Two training opportunities are coming up in early 2024. MDPH, Office of Local and Regional Health, is funding these courses and has contracted with the Berkshire Regional Planning Commission and the Massachusetts Health Officers Association to provide them. A brief application process will be used to allocate limited spots in the two trainings. Please read through the details carefully and complete the application below.
Food Course Dates (Must attend all 3 days and complete homework to receive credit. For special circumstances may make up 1 missed class with permission. This class is not suitable for attending by phone, except for audio only. Please attend with a computer or tablet with camera and microphone.)
Food Cohort 1 – Jan. 30, Feb. 1 & 8, 12:30 - 4:30 p.m.
Food Cohort 2 – Feb. 13, 15, & 22, 12:30 - 4:30 p.m.
Food Cohort 3 – Feb. 27, 29 & Mar. 7, 12:30 - 4:30 p.m.
Housing Course Dates
In person Housing - Jan. 25, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. MA Firefighter's Academy, Stow
Virtual Housing - Feb. 5 and 7, 9 am to 12 noon (Must attend both days. This class is not suitable for attending by phone, except for audio only. Please attend with a computer or tablet with camera and microphone.)

MA PHIT Housing Refresher Course
The Housing Refresher course is designed for those who have completed the classroom portion of MA PHIT Housing course, but not the field training. If you already completed field training or haven't completed a MA PHIT (online or in person) you are not eligible to take this course. There will be two cohorts of this course: 1 full day in the classroom or two half days online. Paul Halfmann is the lead instructor, and the course is administered by MHOA. Space is limited to 30 people per class.
MA PHIT Food Complete Series
MA PHIT Food is designed to enhance the comprehensive and uniform implementation of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) Food Code and FDA Voluntary Retail Program Standards with the focus on meeting FDA Standard 2. This training series assists LPH professionals specializing in Food Protection in improving their understanding of food safety and meets the new MDPH workforce training requirements that include online education, the MA PHIT Food classroom, and the associated field training components.
Next steps
Those who complete these trainings will be eligible to start field training with their Hub Trainer. In order to match specific hub capacity with the number of field training students in their region, a lottery may be necessary. You may indicate your course priorities below. The lottery will be conducted by BRPC, MHOA, and DPH. If you are not selected for these courses other opportunities will be offered later in 2024.
